Defending Principles of the Constitution Against Oppression
Jane Fonda, 87, has revived the First Amendment Committee
Initially founded by her father, actor Peter Fonda, in 1947 to defend freedom of speech. She has already gained the support of hundreds of Hollywood stars.
In a statement, the Oscar-winning actress and longtime activist announced the initiative, calling on her famous colleagues to join her in confronting what she describes as “the most frightening moment” of her life.
“I am 87 years old. I have witnessed war, oppression, protests, and backlash. I have been both celebrated and labeled an enemy of the state. But I can say one thing: this is the most frightening moment of my life,” Fonda expressed in a letter shared with CNN.

Fonda spoke about the committee her father created to combat attacks on freedom of expression during what became known as the McCarthy era.
“The McCarthy era ended when Americans from across the political spectrum united to defend the principles of the Constitution against forces of oppression,” Fonda wrote. “Now those forces have returned, and it is our turn to stand together in defense of our constitutional rights.”
"We refuse to stand by and let this happen. Freedom of speech is an inalienable right for all Americans, regardless of background or political beliefs—whether you are liberal or conservative. The ability to criticize, question, protest, and even mock those in power is essential for the United States to be what it has always aspired to be."
